On Tuesday night the Omega Men's team played to a 7-5 win at the Soccerdome. Against a team with many young players, lots of energy, and an athletic goalkeeper, we came back from 0-2 down to a 3-3 tie at the half and then pushed to a 6-3 lead late in the fourth.
Using a new formation with a sweeper, two wing-mids and two forwards we opened up our passing game and were able to get the ball out of defence into the attacking zone without losing possession. With our old system of a sweeper, a defensive mid and an attacking mid we were often forced to pass through traffic; with the new approach we opened more passing lanes for diagonal passes and "one-two's" ("give and go's").
Chris Greene scored our first with a clean 12 yard shot from a free-kick. Fabian tied the game at two. After the game went to 3-3 it was not clear which way things would go because the success of our new formation was countered by their youth and at least one player with college-level skills; but Dan Mahala was in the right place at the right time to score a header early in the third. From that point on we were in the driving seat.
Next game is Thursday, June 18 at 7:30. We still need one or two extra players who can play forward.
