The Omega Adult Men's team played to a 5-3 victory in the final game of the season at the Soccerdome on Thursday night.  A little concerned that the other team had youth and a full bench of subs on its side, while we were dependent on experience, three younger players, and only two subs on the bench, we began cautiously.  We played possession soccer, controlling the ball, and doing our best to make clean passes on the ground. With Mike Reilly back in goal, the defense played with confidence and did a good job getting the ball into open positions in mid-field.  This gave Luis, Miguel, and Oscar, our three forwards, the opportunity to build passing-based attacks.

First goal went to Mike Coons as we pushed three players forward on a counter-attack.  The other team had expected to run circles round us, and when we scored a second, courtesy of a lovely through pass from Carlitos to Luis, they began to get frustrated.  This was good for us, because it meant our defense could play a holding game, giving them space on the boards but denying them around the penalty-box.  The effect was that they either made mistakes trying to pass, letting us intercept the ball, or they took wild shots from distance.

By the fourth period we were 4-1 up on a goal by Miguel and another goal by Luis. Mid-way through the third, after we went up by three goals, they began to send their very large goalkeeper forward in desperate charges at our goal.  This had the desired effect when the ball squirted to an unmarked player just outside our penalty box and one of our defenders blocked Mike's view from the relatively soft shot.  A few minutes later a silly foul just outside the box gave them a free-kick that somehow found its way into our goal, making it 4-3.

We took deep breaths and decided to hold the score-line. Tired as we were, we fell into desperation-ball, kicking the ball out of defense instead of taking control, but gradually we regained our shape and controlled the game for the last ten minutes, forcing them back into their half and, finally, scoring a goal to put the game out of their reach.

The new season starts next week.  Pleas contact me if you, or anyone you know, might want to join the team. Steve. (dilkss@umkc.edu or 816-678-3755).
