Mike Reilly saves Penalty and the game!

In the second game of the new season we were up against a familiar team.  With a couple of very skilled players and a few who use basketball-style blocks and charges to good effect, they are tough to play. And they scored first.

Luis, Danni, Miguel, and Chris rotated into the positions up front; Mike M.,  Dan and I rotated in defence, and Mike C. and Carlitos subbed for each other in mid-field.  This gave us a nice pattern of substitutions and kept us organized.  And fresh! Gradually we began to settle into a passing strategy and started to work through mid-field, creating scoring chances.  Chris was especially impressive on his second game back from an ankle injury, scoring three on the night.

We went ahead 2-1 just before the first buzzer on a ball lofted by Danni from the half-way line over their goalie's head.  Then in the second we dominated, taking the score to 5-2 on goals by Chris and Luis.  We lost the plot in the third, letting them back in the game so that at the end of three we were tied at 5-5.

Fighting off a five-person attack early in the fourth, Steve (that's me!) attacked the ball just inside the box but also caught the player's feet.  Victor called a penalty and gave me a blue-card.  Watching from the sin-bin, I saw Mike Reilly dive to his right to parry the ball to the boards at the corner.  This brilliant save turned out to be the game-saver.

Keeping one defender and three attackers on the field we controlled the four versus five powerplay; we then matched them goal for goal until full-time. After four periods it was 7-7.

In extra time a nice through-pass from Miguel set Luis free to weave around their loan defender; he shifted the ball to his left foot, cracked off an accurate low shot, and it was 8-7!

Next game is at 8:40 on Sept 10.  New players are still welcome to join.  Contact me at dilkss@umkc.edu or 816-678-3755.
